First established by Mormon pioneers in 1847, the area became known as Holladay, after one of the first settlers. Holladay, the longest continually inhabited settlement in Utah was very attractive to settlers. The area was very desirable because of the natural springs, grasses, and wildflowers along with all the streams and ponds that dotted the area. It had great conditions for agriculture, orchards, and business which promoted steady growth over the years. Another center of the settlement, shared with neighboring Cottonwood Heights, is known as Knudsen’s corner, the area settled in the mid-19th century by Rasmus Knudsen. The first enclosed shopping mall in Utah was constructed here nearly 100 years later. The city was first incorporated as Holladay-Cottonwood in 1999, but the name was shortened later that year, and the borders had been expanded several times. Its residents wanted more say in what happened with their beautiful community, especially planning and zoning. It initially operated with a “strong mayor” government but was changed a few years later to a “council-manager” form. It is known for heavily wooded lots, quality older homes, and beautiful waterscapes. Preservation of the open space and commercial development control has been the major political problem being faced in recent history.
