West Valley City, UT
West Valley City is a Suburb of Salt Lake City which is located in Salt Lake County in the State of Utah. During the 2010 census, it was recorded the population was at 129,480, making it the #2 largest city in the state of Utah. The first known residents of the western part of the Salt Lake Valley or West Valley City were Native Americans. They belonged to the of the Ute and Shoshone tribes. The first settlers were pioneers from the Latter Day Saint Church. These settlers were escaping persecution they had faced in Illinois. These Mormon pioneers first arrived in 1847. The first land to be claimed was by Joseph Harker and his family. They named the area “over Jordan” which translated to the land west of the Jordan River. Welsh Mormon settlers also arrived and they were responsible for developing irrigation systems and started farming in the area. Farming began in 1881 and fruit trees were their main source of agriculture. The unincorporated area became incorporated just under 100 years later. This area was known as Granger, Redwood, Chesterfield, and Hunter and later West Valley City. This seems like it would be confusing to have so many names for a city. More recently during the 2016 census, 136,574 people were living in West Valley City. Most of the population of West Valley City is caucasian and the other large portion is Hispanic or Latino, with a small population of black, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Native American. West Valley city is home to the Maverick Center of the ECHL and to the Utah Grizzlies. You will also find the Utah Cultural Celebration Center, Stonebridge Golf Course, Hale Centre Theatre, Valley Fair Mall, Rocky Mountain Raceways, and the USANA Amphitheatre which are all pretty awesome. One of my favorite parts of West Valley City is the town has one of the last drive-in movie theatres left in the state of Utah. If you are in the mood for some old-fashioned fun, then West Valley is the place to be!
